Writing film scripts is not an easy thing to do, as it requires creativity, knowledge of the subject and hold in the language or languages the script is narrated in. And, when it comes to writing script for a feature length documentary, it becomes tough to impress if not narrated effectively.

In this article, we will delve deeper into how to write a feature length documentary.

1.The first step is to find a compelling idea. Since, this would be generally a 90-minute short feature film, events would happen very quickly. Normally, there are no sub-plots in the storyline, as the whole script revolves around a central plot or one key scene. There must be some resolution at the end that must not seem forced or out-of-place. Certain genres are very difficult to portray in this feature documentary, which includes, horror or science fiction.

2.A treatment for the feature film documentary would be necessary to visualize the final shooting, and will also provide certain amount of flexibility to the script during its final development. A general feedback from others would be better as it is very important to know whether viewers are able to view what the writer has actually envisioned.

3.While writing the original script, a few parameters must be maintained. Characters must be few, and the main character should be etched in such a way that the target audience can understand it. The scenes are to be described in the greatest details and what is it focusing on. The dialogues must be centered on the main theme of the documentary.

4.Most importantly, the subject of the documentary must be displayed prominently. The characters and the actions must lead to the resolution that is required of the film. In a short story based feature film, the script cannot afford to have any diversion, and yet it should not be stuffed in with too much content so that the audience gets confused.

5.In short films, a lot can be said through background narrations. So, it must be employed intelligently, if the story is longer than the script can accommodate through the characters and actions. However, too much use of the background narrations would spoil the script, as it would make it boring for the audience.

6.Sound and music plays an important role in such documentaries. It should be emphasized where sounds are to be used, mentioning the scene as well as what kind of sound is to be played. During change of a scene, the music to be used must also be mentioned.

Feature film documentaries have a dedicated audience group, mainly of critical nature. Although, the direction of the film accounts a lot, the merit of the script is also a deciding factor.

As a scriptwriter, it is not enough to write a brilliant script, it should be pitched properly to the correct people. Pitching is to summarization of the script with emphasis on the characters and the main theme of the story. This can be done face-to-face, online or through meet-ups like pitch festivals and boot camps. With so many television channels coming up, there is scope for a lot of TV series in various genres. So, it is important to pitch your idea to the proper person. In this article, a few ways to pitch a TV series have been mentioned.

1.Through personal visits: Nothing impresses like a face-to-face visit. However, the script must be completely prepared, and the scriptwriter must have clear idea about the characters and the actions in the script. A deep research on the script’s theme is something that a writer should prepare as homework before meeting the concerned person. Generally, it is the director, producer or an agent whom the writer would be pitching your script to. So, it is a good idea to know whether the concerned person is currently planning to take up projects that cater to your script’s genre. Otherwise, it would be an inconsequential effort for the writer. If you are wondering where you could get the names and contact of such people, the end credits of TV shows have the names you would probably need. A search on the Internet with the names as keyword would provide their details.

2.Online or via Email: The next best option is to pitch your TV show online. Nowadays, everyone is technology-dependent. So, instead of meeting budding scriptwriters all day, some agents or producer/directors prefer to have scripts pitched through email. Hence, the pitching must emphasize on the main aspects of the script. The producer may not have the time to go through the complete synopsis or treatment that you might want to send, so it is absolutely necessary to get them interested from the word go! Here, the first thing to be mentioned is the genre, and then the logline – which is basically a single sentence describing the main aspect of the script. Apart from the general outline of the show, the target audience must be mentioned separately. Again, a search on the Internet would provide details of prospective buyers of your script. There are also some websites that allows you to submit your script, which can be read by prospective clients. However, one must be quite cautious about it, as most of the times, such online submissions might lead to your original idea being stolen.

3.There are certain boot camps and workshop/conferences held especially for scriptwriters to pitch their scripts. There would be prospective buyers who would meet budding writers and discuss their scripts, if interested. Hence, it is more difficult than any other way out, as apart from impressing the producer/director with your pitching, you’ll have to compete with other writers as well.

Hence, there are many avenues for pitching your script. It is up to the merit of the script and your ability to pitch properly, in order to get your TV series script set rolling on the floors.

A lot of scripts are written everyday, and are being bought and sold the film market. However, there are several scripts that do not get any attention. However, it is not entirely because the script lacks merit. In some cases, improper formatted scripts are the main cause behind the failure. Script readers get a lot of scripts to read each day. If the script is well formatted, only then it can be expected to be read. Hence, it is of paramount importance to format the script well. This report will look deeper into ways to format a script for final submission.

1.A sample film script should be read first to collect an idea about how a proper script should be. Some websites offer free scripts of movies, which can be downloaded and read through carefully. The major points should be noted down and implemented in the script to be written.

2.Books are a good reference point while writing a proper script. There are several books that speak about screenwriting and the elements associated with it. It is important to choose a book which has the basics written clearly and can be referred time to time. The book must also serve as a ready reference for character development and describing action in the script.

3.It is a good idea to purchase a screenwriting software. This would help the writer concentrate on the script rather than the nitty gritty of formatting a script. The software takes care of the accepted format In short, it makes life much easier for a scriptwriter.

4.The lingo of screenwriting must be mastered and implemented in the script. It makes the work look more professional and sends the message across quicker. Jargons such as “fade in” and “cut to” can be used if needed. However, one must be careful to judge its appropriateness. Adding them unnecessarily for the sake of adding would do just the opposite.

5.Maintaining one style throughout the script is important. Varying on the style would make the script look amateur. However, there are no strict rules governing it, and it is up to the writer to exercise his freedom of writing the script in a way he/she wants to, but it should be consistent throughout. However, while writing the script, one must stick to a single font type and size.

6. Feedback is very important for the writer to assess the script. Self-assessment is the first step, as no one understands the script better than the writer. However, certain peers can be given a look through, to bring out loopholes in the script, which might not be apparent to the writer.

Screenwriting is not only about writing good scripts that have a compact storyline, is well researched and is the perfect material for a good film. Screenwriting is also about marketing the script and building a network of people who are useful. Marketing a script can be done with the help of pitching, but individual visits to producers can be tiring. Hence, film festivals, and more importantly screenwriting festivals are important for the career of a screenwriter.

Such festivals can be a great learning avenue for a newcomer, an eye opener in real sense. It is not only about meeting potential investors and discussing scripts but getting to know the industry and its needs a lot well. This report discusses the advantages of visiting a festival in the career of a screenwriter.

1.To know what genres and stories filmmakers prefer currently: It is a great opportunity to measure the industry. There would be scores of directors and producers present in the festival, all discussing their current or future projects. A particular trend could be noticed if observed carefully. The writer should observe the trend and try to write scripts that go along with the trend.

2.Meeting filmmakers, agents and other writers: This is perhaps the main purpose of a film festival. Interacting with people who could buy the scripts would give the writer an honest idea about his creation. It is extremely beneficial to receive feedback and suggestions from parties concerned, and it should be implemented in the scripts.

3.Attending workshops and seminars: This is an added bonus of attending film festivals. Seminars, workshops and conferences are immensely beneficial, especially for the budding writers, as a lot of ideas come up during the meet. Just listening to the conferences would result to nothing, one has to implement them and improve their writing. It is not only experts, from whom something can be learnt; the peers might also provide some valuable advice or feedback.

4.Film festivals have always served as a great motivation for inspired writers. The complete industry, along with the glamour is truly motivating for everyone, especially for the ones who want to create a mark in the industry.

Thus it is important to visit such festivals, make full use of it, make a network of peers and seniors from whom assistance can be expected and a few contacts with filmmakers must also be made. Film festivals have often been the launching point of many a screenwriter, so it is a tried and tested avenue, and quite a successful one too.

A TV series is completely different from feature films that are generally complete within a short period of 120 minutes. Hence, writing a script for a TV series is also different altogether. While a film script is compact and fast paced, a TV series script relies more on the characters and the way things happen with them. They way the characters react to different scenarios they are made to face makes a TV series keep going. Hence, a complete documentation of the characters, their complete, the theme of the storyline must be maintained. This documentation, in industry terms, is known as the bible.

The process of building a bible is a hectic one and is sometimes more crucial than the script itself. A TV series generally rolls on for several episodes, divided over seasons. Hence, the director or editor might need to refer to the bible in addition to the script for betting portrayal of the character. In this report, we will describe the steps to create a bible for a TV series.

1.The concept of the series must be noted at the beginning. The concept is basically what matters for a TV series, as scripts are small and many for each episode. The main theme is what matters for the scriptwriter to follow. Viewers would look for variety in episodes, while wanting the characters to maintain the continuity of the series. The continuity can be achieved through regular reference to the main concept.

2.The location and the time period for the series must be mentioned. The script might move ahead with time, which makes it important for the writer to document this change, and the changes it brings in the characters. A series might be showcased on more than one location, portraying different characters, which makes it important to observe the location in the bible.

3.The biography of the characters must be written down. Most of the characters are continuing characters, hence beside their physical and social traits, a gist of what they want and how they would achieve their goals should also be written. The interactions and relationships between the characters must also be mentioned.

4.On an episode basis, the actions and the conflicts taking place centering the characters must be written. It could be vague and pertain to first few episodes of the series. Generally, such entries are done season-by-season.

5.Certain sample stories must also be mentioned in a single paragraph for future scriptwriters to understand the flow and rhythm of the original script.

Documentaries are essentially based on real life situations or on important topics that could be historical, geographical, and political or in that case, anything serious. There is a definite way in which a documentary must be written, so that it can be capable enough to hold on to the audience’s attention for the complete period. This report looks into the different steps to write a documentary that would interest the audiences.

1.An idea for the documentary must be though of. The idea has to be original, as well as loaded with content that can keep them interested for the entire period, which is normally around 90 minutes.

2.The goals that are to be achieved through the documentary must be outlined at the onset. There can be a lot of genres on which the documentary can be based. Depending on the genre of the documentary, a set of objectives should be prepared and the documentary and the eventual filming must reflect those.

3.The subject of the documentary must be thoroughly researched and widely covered. It is not enough to load the documentary with information, as that would not interest the audience. Often, a lot of information is already known to a lot of people, therefore interesting and innovative ways to present them must be adapted.

4.Communicating with experts related to the subject of the documentary would be a good idea to maintain a rich collection of resource for research purposes. In some cases, especially, historical documentaries, there is a scope of controversy with the portrayal of the content. In that case, advices and suggestions of experts in the related field would be invaluable.

5.The viewer plays an active role in the writing the documentary. An outline of what the viewer takes back from the documentary must be made. There are certain emotions that a particular documentary might bring out of the audiences. Therefore, such expectations out of the viewer must be considered and implemented likewise.

6.The documentary must be filled with the research done by the writer. More the information, richer the documentary would be. However, stuffing of information would lead to undesired consequences.

7.The sound and camera angles, along with the complete cinematography play an important role. A certain amount of information might be given away through background narrations. These things are to be thought of and implemented in the documentary.

A scriptwriter cannot possibly make his script sell, with just creativity and excellent writing skills in his kitty – he must be able to pitch his script in front of the parties concerned. Pitching a script can be stressful for the writer, but it is absolutely essential to be perfect in the art, so as to convince potential investors to consider it seriously.

Pitching is basically an animated summarization of the script, with special emphasis on the main characters and the events that matter with a special mention of the genre the script is based on. Pitching can be done personally or by other avenues like websites that facilitate online submission of a pitch, and also through community meetings like pitch festivals and pitch boot camp. However, when we do have a personal pitching to be done, it becomes advantageous, as we can directly communicate with our listener, who in this case, could be the director, producer, the studio executive or even an agent.

There are two forms in which pitching comes in – the short “teaser” pitch, and the long “story” pitch. The teaser pitch, being short, must be completed in about three sentences and must cover points like genre, premise and the target market of the film. Since it is extremely short, a good performance would create a great impact on the listener. However, one needs to prepare teaser pitches according to the listener. While the producer would be more interested in the casting procedure, marketing strategy, the cost of the film; the director of the story executive would like to know about the genre and the content. The general pattern goes like this: the first line would describe the main characters of the script, while the next sentence should shed light on the content and the genre, while the last line should have your listener wanting to know more about the script.

The story pitch is quite longer than the teaser, and generally goes around for about ten minutes. While the longer pitch gives you time to describe your product nicely, it also increases the chances of errors. One must concentrate on staying on the topic and narrate the story in an interesting manner. The pitch should start with the logline – a sentence that would describe the main essence of the script. This would be followed by the introduction of the main characters and how the things turn out to be as the story progresses, with emphasis on suspense, twists and turns. The climax needs to be narrated properly and should not have anyone falling short of their expectations.

However, besides the script and the pitch, what’s paramount is the personality of the writer. The pitching has to be done with a lot of enthusiasm, and a bit of wit would help build a rapport with the listener.

So, if you have a golden script, and you can pitch it well, you can be rest assured that, potential investors would certainly buy your script for further consideration.

Script writing is an art that requires limitless imagination along with detailed knowledge about the script’s story and a good hold of the language(s) in which the script would be written. The horror genre adds more challenge to the scriptwriter. The story should be compact and with its own set of twists, that should not seem out of place. The script should have a simple story, although it could be portrayed in a complex manner if desired, all at the risk of the comprehension level of the target audience. This report showcases a few steps about writing a horror film script.

a.The opening scene should be special. In most cases, it is a good idea to have the audience off the hook before they can expect any suspense. Having mentioned that, the opening suspense scene must not be a forced one, and should be in tune with the script altogether.

b.The central character should be introduced next. Most often, writers tend to introduce their central character in a scene that brings out the script’s main story line. However, a better idea would be to give the central character some screen time without being made to cope with the tragedy that’s approaching him/her. The audience could then relate and emphasized with the character in a better way.

c.The central character should have a flaw that would lead him to the misery that follows. It could be a fear or phobia of something; or a wrongdoing of the past. It is up to the writer’s imagination and his vision of the story, to relate the character to the script’s main plot.

d.There should be some misleading scenes meant to bring the audience to the edge of their seat. The central character should ideally be in a helpless condition, and a series of well-timed scenes could be brought, which would scare the audience, but would be normal in reality.

e.Supposedly, the script should be reaching half way by now, and it is high time to unleash the evil completely. It would be ideal if the main character could identify the evil and the truth behind it, either by accident or by some brave investigation.

f.Once the main story is out, the final chase begins. It could be either way: the main character trying to demolish the evil; or running away to save his/her life. It should be taken care of that the main character doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary that makes the audience lose faith in the film.

g.After a series of events, we should be reaching a conclusion by now. Again, the conclusion could go either way: the hero wins, or the evil. However, it would be safe to have the hero win over the evil.

h.The closing scene could be filled with suspense again. In case the hero had defeated the evil, there could be a scope to continue the script in a sequel, by portraying that the evil never dies completely. A subtle hint that the evil is lurking somewhere could do the trick.

Writing a decent script is not enough. It should be interesting to the audience, and in order to reach the audience, first, it has to catch the attention of a producer or a director, or even an agent in that case. The best way to attract investors to a script is by pitching it nicely. Pitching is basically a verbal summarization of the script with special emphasis on the main characters, the conflict in the story along with certain important features like the genre and target audience.

With changing times, effective ways of pitching has also changed. Producers and agencies have now taken the aid of technology to help them listen to the pitching of scripts. This not only is a fair medium, but also saves time of giving an appointment and enables to consider them at own convenient time. The report delves into the possible online avenues of pitching a film script.

1.Via email: Most producers or directors welcome this medium of considering scripts. It is advantageous for scriptwriters as well, as it saves them the time to go and meet each and every producer personally and make an effort of pitching the script. However, the process must be structured so that it can be efficient for both parties concerned. A fixed format must be followed with the genre and a brief logline being the subject of the mail. The pitch should not be long but should be able to communicate the main theme of the story. In some cases, the writer would want to attach a video of their pitching for better chances of their script getting selected. This is helpful, but attachment size must be considered, as a huge attachment would be deterrent for the writer, as the producer might not want to download it.

2.Online: There are certain websites that facilitate submissions of pitching. A few would let the writer create a web page of their own, showcasing their profile and pitching their scripts. This is an upcoming medium for pitching. This is useful for scriptwriters and as well as budding directors and potential producers. It is basically a community where the writer pitches his/her script openly for anyone to respond. However, there are certain disadvantages in pitching a script online. Pitching a script public might result in the idea getting stolen. It is a good practice to provide a teaser of the script and the interested parties can be requested to contact the writer for further information. This is basically partially pitching the script.

A film script is the blueprint for the actual film to be shot. The script can be the original work of the writer, or an adaptation from a novel or short story written by some different author, who has consented to the adaptation.

The standard specification for a film script is to use the 12-point Courier or Courier New font, without any use of bolding or italicizing. The following points represent the most followed format of writing a film script.

1) The title page

The title page creates the first impression in the mind of a producer and thus the screenplay should seem interesting and must portray the writer as a professional in the field of script writing. The title must be emphasized by underling or putting it under quotation marks. A logline might follow, which would describe the film in a sentence (but not necessary to include). The contact information along with any copyright details must be mentioned at the bottom of the title page.

2) Transitions

The transitions are short descriptions depicting the progress of a film from one scene to another. It is however, not essential and should only be used if necessary. For instance, a Time Cut can attribute a time gap, while a Match Cut can be used to denote the association between elements in two different scenes.

3) Scene headings

A particular scene must be preceded with a scene heading. It must begin with “EXT” if it is to be held outdoor, or else it should be marked as “INT”. The scene heading must also contain name of the location in capital letters. The time of the shooting follows next, which would be placed in the same line beside the location name and with an indentation of ” – “. There should be a left margin of 1.5 inch and a right margin of 1 inch for the screen heading.

4) Page breaks

When a page break occurs in between a paragraph, the break must be placed in between a sentence and not between two complete sentences.

5) Action

The action should be in present tense and describe the observations on the screen.

6) Dialogue

The verbal communication of a character is termed as a dialogue and should always be inside quotation marks.

7) Parenthetical

This option should not be used unless it is a necessity. However, the notation can be used during a long dialogue by a character.
